Surveying for Public Safety: Supporting the Eccles Fire Station Refurbishment

OVERVIEW:

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service planned a refurbishment and extension of Eccles Fire Station to modernise facilities and support operational efficiency. To progress design safely, architects required an accurate, complete picture of the existing building and surrounding grounds.

Tri-Tech were appointed to undertake a full topographical survey and comprehensive measured building survey, providing the technical clarity needed for redevelopment.

the challenge

Active emergency service sites operate under strict time pressures and safety protocols. Our team needed to:

Work safely around live emergency operations

Ensure emergency readiness was never compromised

Capture detailed internal data while maintaining access routes

Survey an ageing structure with inconsistent legacy drawings

This required precise coordination and a responsive on-site approach.

our approach:

We delivered a full scope of surveyed information, including:

Internal measured building survey - floor plans, room layouts, structural elements

External elevations - capturing detailed façade information

Topographical survey - site levels, boundaries, access, drainage and hardstanding

Integrated survey datasets - aligned for seamless design development

Our surveyors collaborated closely with fire service staff, adapting around emergency drills, shifts and vehicle movements to ensure safe, uninterrupted station operations.

results & impact

The final deliverables provided the client and design team with:

Data suitable for architectural design, planning and structural assessment

Accurate geometry for designing new facilities and adapting existing spaces

Reduced design risk through clarity on structure, layout and levels

A complete, verified digital record of the existing station

The project strengthened the station’s path toward modernisation and reinforced SSS as a trusted survey partner for critical public-sector sites.
